What kind of samples are accepted?
24-hour composite samples are preferred. You may find the videos linked on our Biobot website helpful for understanding how to install and collect samples from an autosampler.
We are able to accept grab samples on a case-by-case basis in extenuating circumstances. If you have any questions about sampling methods, please contact our team by emailing support@biobot.io.
If your location does not have a composite autosampler, you may complete an online application through the Water Environment Federation (WEF) to determine if you are eligible to receive a free autosampler. The application can be found here.
Please note that we can only accept influent wastewater at this time.
How often do I need to sample?
How often you sample is dictated by the guidelines of your respective program
- Biobot Network participants sample once per week
- CDC program participants sample twice per week
- Customers belonging to programs outside of the Biobot Network and CDC will have a customized sampling cadence. Please feel free to reach out to us at support@biobot.io to confirm your unique sampling schedule.
Sampling at a higher frequency may allow you to detect trends more quickly and glean more time-sensitive public health insights.
How do I return the sample to the Biobot lab?
The pre-paid overnight return shipping label included with each sampling kit should be used to ship the sample to our lab via FedEx. You may drop samples off at any FedEx location, or you may coordinate a pick-up schedule through our shipping partner, Mercury. Please see our FAQ page on Schedule Recurring FedEx Pick-Ups for details on how to set up and manage a recurring pick-up schedule.
What if I can't ship the sample on the same date it is collected?
A Biobot wastewater sample can be safely stored in a refrigerator (4°C) for up to two weeks without compromising its integrity. Our lab processes all samples received, regardless of the sample's date of collection or sample storage conditions. Please see our FAQ page on Storing Samples for Delayed Pick-Up for additional details.
What if I can't collect a sample on my scheduled sampling day?
If for any reason you are unable to sample on your scheduled day, you may choose a new day during the week to collect the sample. Please accurately record the sample collection date on your sampling log, and reach out to support@biobot.io if any questions arise.
Can I catch the SARS-CoV-2 virus from handling wastewater?
There is no evidence to date that anyone has become sick with COVID-19 because of exposure from wastewater. Standard practices associated with wastewater treatment plant operations should be sufficient to protect wastewater workers from SARS-CoV-2. These standard practices can include engineering and administrative controls, handwashing, specific safe work practices, and personal protective equipment normally required when handling untreated wastewater. Beyond CDC recommendations for how to protect against COVID-19, no additional COVID-19-specific protections are recommended for workers managing wastewater, including those at wastewater treatment facilities.
